Putting aside the usual blog snark for a moment, today is Veterans Day and I'd like to take the opportunity to thank any veterans in our midst. I know that includes William, but if there are any others, drop a shout and be recognized.

We owe you guys.



Oh, and I know there are any number of amazing, solemn pictures of war, but I liked the sense of camaraderie in this one.

Here's the story:

It's no secret that when holiday music hits radio, you're going to hear way more songs about Christmas than Chanukah. With Christmas, you get a bevy of classics like 'White Christmas,' 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town,' 'Jingle Bells' and on and on. With Chanukah, you're lucky if you hear more than 'The Dreidel Song.' So, when Neil Diamond -- who's been called the "Jewish Elvis" -- wanted to include a song about the festival lights on his third Christmas album, he turned to an unlikely source: Adam Sandler.

That's right -- on Diamond's upcoming 'A Cherry, Cherry Christmas,' the singer rocks a pretty hilarious and dead-on cover of Sandler's 'The Chanukah Song,' the actor-comedian's list of famous Jews that features such witticisms as "Paul Newman's half Jewish, Goldie Hawn's half too/put them together, what a fine-looking Jew." Diamond even addresses the dearth of Chanukah songs at the beginning of his version, saying, "There are so many beautiful Christmas songs around and so few Chanukah songs, so I thought we'd try this one for you."

The track -- which Spinner stumbled upon here -- was produced by new Guns 'N' Roses guitarist DJ Ashba and is featured alongside two new originals -- the title track and 'Christmas Dream.' Seasonal standards like 'Deck the Halls,' 'Winter Wonderland' and 'Jingle Bell Rock' also make appearances. The disc will be in stores Oct. 13, the same day as Bob Dylan's debut entry into the holiday music market, 'Christmas in the Heart'.

When we checked in with Diamond, he had this simple message for Spinner's readers: "Happy Chanukah, y'all."

Show the love...

I had some jokey possibilities for Valentine's Day posts, but I thought I'd go sincere instead. Or at least sincere by way of geeky list-making!

The idea here is to list five notable movies ya dig that deal with the theme of love. They can be happy or sad, serious or funny, romantic or effed up, requited love or unrequited. And they don't even have to be your favorites, just a list of five that strike you for whatever reason.

Here's my wholly random list:

It Happened One Night - Pretty much the first great romantic banter movie, with smartass Clark Gable going up against sassy heiress Claudette Colbert. Still funny as hell and the final scene is one of my fave in all filmdom.

Fandango - This cult fave of mine is mostly a college road-trip flick, but I always loved the backdrop of Costner's unrequited love. The wedding at the end is genuinely touching.

Wall*E - I was surprised by how experimental this flick was - practically a silent movie for most of its running time. It's all heart, though, and if you're not feelin' the waterworks during the fire extinguisher sequence, you might not be human.

The Fly (Cronenberg remake) - I had to have at least one effed-up movie on the list! But The Fly really covers a lot of ground - it's got a weird 'n' sexy romance between charismatic dork Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis at her hottest, it's got an awkward love triangle, and it's most definitely got one of the creepiest birthing scenes of all time (o_O)

The Trouble With Harry - Only saw this lesser-known Hitchcock flick within the last few years, and it's weird as hell (black comedy and romance revolving around disposing of a corpse), but I love it to pieces. John Forsythe is witty as hell as the abstract artist in the picturesque little town that doesn't get him, and Shirley MacLaine is just ridiculously cute and quirky.
