Vanguard
It's a news documentary show that focuses on a single topic per episode. It's done in a minimalistic, man on the street sort of fashion with as little crew as possible, and it's really, really good (seems its a peabody award winner even). I've been checking it out on Hulu and thought I'd share.
Best part: it's on hulu and most episodes are barely over 20 mins each.

Wild Boasts and Baseless Claims
So I heard some talk about a study while listening to BBC World Service. Unfortunately, I can't find the study in print or online anywhere, so I'm just giving you second hand claims that I can't evidence. But I heard it on the radio, so it must be true right?
It was a study of what your cigarette brand says about you and how you culturally identify yourself. There was a ton of info associated with the study, but the two parts that popped for me were:
A) Marlboro smokers were most likely to identify themselves as republican voters.
B) Camel smokers were likely to identify themselves as part of some counter culture.
Totally suspected this for years and felt it was the case, but I never knew it was accurate and not just my gut feeling that was based on nothing substantial.

Use Twitter? Time to change your password.
Last night the DNS redirect for Twitter.com was compromised to point to a site featured in the screenshot. This means the hackers had access to twitter's database files... and your password/username combination.
Seems this may be a response to the part Twitter played in the recently failed Iranian uprising as the folowing translation is being reported by Techcrunch.com:
“In the name of God, As an Iranian this is a reaction to Twitter’s interference sly which was U.S. authorities ordered in the internal affairs of my country…”

50,000 soldiers believed buried by a cataclysmic sandstorm in 525 B.C.
The remains of a mighty Persian army said to have drowned in the sands of the western Egyptian desert 2,500 years ago might have been finally located, solving one of archaeology's biggest outstanding mysteries, according to Italian researchers.
Bronze weapons, a silver bracelet, an earring and hundreds of human bones found in the vast desolate wilderness of the Sahara desert have raised hopes of finally finding the lost army of Persian King Cambyses II. The 50,000 warriors were said to be buried by a cataclysmic sandstorm in 525 B.C.
"We have found the first archaeological evidence of a story reported by the Greek historian Herodotus," Dario Del Bufalo, a member of the expedition from the University of Lecce, told Discovery News.

Illegal Downloaders Spend More on Music
The Music industry may be punishing its own core customers with crackdowns as it seems those who pirate spend more on legal music purchases than those who do not pirate.
I find this interesting since I pirate music for sampling purposes. I'll routinely pirate an album I'm curious about and listen for a week or so. If I like it, I buy it. If I don't like it, I delete it... always. Maybe offering some kind free download that only lasts a few days for customers who want to sample before purchase would be a more reasonable strategy to curb stealing and encourage buying?

Google Pisses Off Every GPS Unit Producer
Google Maps Navigation (Beta) features voice guided, turn by turn GPS navigation on phones with a Google Maps app, which is to say every smart phone sold in the last 3 or 4 years.
I think Tom Tom's projected holiday sales just plummeted.

EDIT/UPDATE: Google just specified a bit. Due to some limitations of the iPhone's closed OS, the platform may see a exceptionally crippled version of this functionality or none of it at all. Android, Palm's Web OS, Blackberry, and Windows Mobile remain unaffected.
