Soul Tribute
I'm a big fan of the soul/funk/R&B explosion of the 60s and 70s, and I just saw that one of the great songwriters, Norman Whitfield, died. He wrote (or co-wrote) songs like "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" and "Papa Was a Rolling Stone." Big stuff. Cornerstone stuff. More info here, but for now, the best tribute is his music itself (all live versions here)...

Downtown entertainment suggestions for Saturday night?
Is your or your friend's band playing? Is there a cool artsy show of a nonmusical nature?
Basically anything but dance clubs...
I'll be one of two photographers in a large mega-shoot event downtown for Metal Dolls with 10 to 15 models, and we're going to be looking to check out the nightlife after the evening shoot. I'd like to have a couple non-touristy suggestions ready so we don't just end up hitting dance club after dance club along 6th street.
Basically anything but dance clubs...

I caught this on another message board. Nothing crazy-remarkable - just some soldiers dancing goofily to "Billy Jean" in front of a camcorder, but there's something so super-cute about the girl I'm compelled to post it. She reminds me of Tara from Buffy, and that's not a bad thing.
Her back-up guy, however, reminds me more of Officer Dangle from Reno 911. And somehow that works, too.

It's been a while since we last did this, so...
Pull up your entire iTunes (or whatever music player software of your choice) library, put it on shuffle, and list the first five songs. Post it in the comments. No cheating, no do-overs! The first five songs that come up, no matter how weird or embarrassing they may be!
1. Aren't You The Guy - They Might Be Giants - A 7 second track that sings "Aren't You The Guy Who Hit Me In The Eye?" Hmm... I've got some weird shit on my iPod
2. Ying Xiong Men Zhan Sheng Le Da Du He - Luo Zong Xian - Not in fact a random collection of vaguely Chinese nonsense words, but a bouncy little instrumental track from the Kung Fu Hustle soundtrack
3. Space Ho's (Madlib Remix) - Dangerdoom - Fun little track about, uh, space hos by Dangermouse and MF Doom, from a free EP I downloaded from Cartoon Network after last year's post-STAPLE! live art show. The DJ there turned me on to it, and it was good stuff. This isn't my favorite track off the EP, but hey... it was free.
4. Track 51 of 226 - Black Dahlia Audiobook by James Ellroy - I haven't actually listened to this yet, I just got it. But I've been wanting to read it for a while, and so when I got a free audiobook from eMusic, this was the one I picked.
5. Misery Whip - Everclear - It's funny, I kind of find Everclear whiny now, but I dug their music for a few months back when American Movie Vol 1 came out, and I still have their songs on my iPod.
Wow. That isn't even remotely representative of what I usually listen to. And just to cheat, my next five were Not A Crime (Gogol Bordello), which actually is a favorite, Enough Space (Foo Fighters), Ladies Night (Kool & The Gang), Jingle Jane (a Christmas remix) and "Everbody Be Cool," a dialogue snippet by George Clooney from the From Dusk 'Til Dawn soundtrack.
