They had a Q&A with the director of Trick R Treat (a horror flick that Warner Brothers picked up two years ago and never released) at Fantastic Fest, and he said he was told by Warner Brothers that his movie would be released directly to video because it's "Not a remake or a sequel, and we don't know how to market it."
