I've heard nothing but good stuff about the novel series. Pretty smart and hardcore, by all accounts, and far from the usual prancy elf stuff. I figure on checking out the books before the series hits.
The books are great - if you've never read them I highly reccomend you do. They're thick but go down easy, like chocolate milk. Total brain candy.
The setting is what I'd call very "low" fantasy. Not an elf or hobbit to be seen, anywhere. Almost no magic, very few things that could be called monsters. Lots of political intrigue, sexual scandal, combat - all that good stuff. It's a big sprawling fantasy soap opera.
